Are you facing weak Wifi signal problem? Do you want to improve your Wi-fi at home?
You are at right place. There are some small tricks to be implemented to make your Wi-Fi signal stronger.
Here are 10 tips to improve your home or office Wifi network and surf faster with your computer or smartphone.
How to increase the Wi-Fi signal at home: 10 tricks to make it faster
1. POSITION THE WIFI ROUTER ANTENNAS VERTICALLY
The router signal extends perpendicular to the direction of the antennas. If you put the antenna or antennas vertically then the signal will be transmitted horizontally. And it will make it to cover a lager area of your house.
2. LIFT THE WIFI ROUTER FROM THE FLOOR
The antennas of the router emit the radio waves mainly downwards. It is good practice to place the router in a high position (hanging on a wall or on a sufficiently high piece of furniture) for avoiding spreading of the signal network to the basement or to the tenant’s house downstairs.
3. CHANGE THE WIFI NETWORK CHANNEL
If you live in a fairly busy area, with several routers, then be careful to choose the right channel for your wireless network.
In an ideal environment, there should not be more than three “nearby” routers, because each channel also occupies about 2 channels on the left and two channels on the right (though not completely).
Since there are only 13 channels available, those that can be dealt with without creating reciprocal disturbances are 1,6,11 or 2,7,12 or 3,8,13.
There are some software available in the market which can help you in find the best channels for you. NetSurveyor, is one those software.
It helps to identify the Wi-Fi networks, present in the area near us, informing us of the channels occupied and those that can be used without suffering any particular disturbances.
However, up to 3 routers, you can avoid overlap. With 2 routers you can also fit in the channel as far away as possible. But if there are many then there is a high risk of disturbance.
But if you are working with many routers, then you must try to use the “more free” channels.
4. PUT THE WIFI ROUTER IN AN IDEAL PLACE
The router is today a common object, almost like a radio or a TV. It is the device that allows spreading the Internet in Wi-Fi. As a device, it can look as ugly but this does not mean that you have to hide it behind a piece of furniture.
If the signal is to be amplified and boosted as much as possible, the router must be placed in a space free of obstacles and walls.
Finally, make sure that it is centrally located at home, so you have the best coverage possible in all rooms.
5. KEEP THE ROUTER AWAY FROM OTHER ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
All types of electronic devices can interfere with the signal from your router. We are talking about televisions, microwaves, cordless etc., practically everything that generates an electromagnetic signal. Even large metal objects such as mirrors or cabinets and water (the fish aquarium or turtle) can potentially block the signal.
6. Switching to a 5 GHz ROUTER (if necessary)
In case there are too many wireless networks (which use the 2.4 GHz band) you can think of switching to a router that also uses the 5 GHz band.
Here we have many more channels (not overlapping) that have nothing to do with 2.4 GHz network channels, so they are not disturbed at all, not even by other devices that can interfere.
7. INCREASE THE WI-FI CONNECTION REACH WITH DIY TRICKS
The antenna that comes with different router models is omnidirectional, which means that they send signals in all directions.
In these cases, if the router is positioned towards the outer walls, half of the signal goes out of the house. If it is a removable antenna, replace it with a swivel and hold it upward to improve the wireless signal.
If you can not move the router to the center of the house or change antenna, and the signal is not yet powerful enough to cover all the rooms, you can try some tricks that seem like jokes, but that really works.
On the internet, there are many guides to upgrade the antenna using a can of Coca-Cola or open beer or even with an aluminium Domopack film, to open crescent around the antenna orienting the signal.
8. BUY A WI-FI EXTENDER
When you can not reposition the router or when the structural elements of the house make any adjustment impossible, you just have to use a so-called Wi-Fi Extender, which is a device capable of connecting to the main network and generate amplified signals which cover a larger area.
The extender should be placed in an area where the signal starts to weaken.
All major producers have at least one price list and prices may vary a lot depending on the characteristics. Always check the compatibility with the transmission protocols offered by your main router.
While everyone often ensures full compatibility with other brands of routers, using the same manufacturer’s extender can avoid headaches and drawbacks associated with differences in device software.
9. AVOID HACKING OF YOUR WIFI
The best protection is WPA2, but if for some reason it is not available or you have old devices that don’t support it, you can also set the WPA.
On the other hand, the WEP protection should not be used (in the most recent ones it is not even available anymore) because by now it has been verified that it is no longer safe and is easily hackable.
Once you have chosen the type of protection we can set the password for our Wi-Fi network.
10. WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE FAILS, BUY A NEW WIFI ROUTER
If after doing this and contacting a technician the situation does not improve, then you are likely to need a new router.
Technology in this field has changed a lot over the last few years and an old router, however well positioned and updated it may not be able to provide you with a properly fast internet connection.
