Change DNS to open country restricted content on Fire TV Stick

Are you looking for a way to speed up the streaming of your Fire TV Stick or to bypass the geographical restrictions of some sites? Are you abroad and does streaming from your country sites not work? You are in the right place! In this guide, we will see how to change DNS on the Amazon device and other tricks to be able to take advantage of geo-limited content.

Change DNS on Fire Tv Stick

The change of DNS must be done manually. Before proceeding, however, we need to follow an intermediate step, that is to find the IP of the router we are using.

How to find router IP

Finding the IP of our router is quite simple. Just use a computer connected to the same network to which the Fire TV Stick is connected and follow these simple steps.

If you are using a Windows computer:

  • Open the Start menu
  • In the search bar, type prompt or cmd and click on the Command Prompt result
  • In the window that opens, type ipconfig and press Enter

Of the various command lines that will appear, write down the IP address under the heading Default gateway.

If you are using a Mac computer:

  • Open the System Preferences menu
  • Click on Network and then on Advanced
  • Look for the entry TCP/IP and write down the IP address

Change of DNS

After this intermediate step we can proceed to change the DNS. To make sure you can go back to the initial settings, if something goes wrong, we recommend you to write down all the network parameters ( Settings ⇒ My Fire TV ⇒ Information ⇒ Network ). Let’s see now how to change the DNS, for example by entering the DNS of Google, one of the most used.

  • Open the Settings menu and click on Network
  • Tap on your router connection and click on Forget the network
  • Now, in the list of available Wi-Fi networks go to your connection again and click on Advanced
  • Now you will have to manually enter the data of the network that you have previously marked:
    • IP address  (from the settings of your Fire TV stick )
    • Gateway  (previously marked by the network settings of the PC )
    • Network prefix length  (usually the value is 24 )
    • DNS 1 (entered 8.8.8.8 )
    • DNS 2 (entered 8.8.4.4 )

Now you just have to connect to the network and you’re done!

Change country settings

If despite changing the DNS your Fire TV Stick cannot connect with apps or sites with geo-restrictions, you can try changing the country directly from the settings of your Amazon account.

  • Open the Amazon website or app and log in to your account
  • From your account menu click on My account
  • Under the item Account settings click on Contents and devices
  • From the Favorites tab at the top, click on Country / Region Settings and then on Edit.
  • Now choose another country, for example the United States, in case the content you want to play is available in that particular country.

Using a VPN

In case the change of DNS and the change of country are not enough, you can opt for the use of a VPN. If you don’t know what we are talking about, we recommend our guide to better find out what they are and all you need to know.
