A procedure for recording a video call, whether on iPhone, Android, Windows or macOS is the same, regardless of which application is used: you must start recording before making the call, as a way to capture all the content.
Depending on the application, the user can activate the audio recording, screen (received) or microphone (sent) features, to record the sound of the contact on the other side.
However, beware:
For ethical reasons, always inform the contact that you will record the audio/video call on your PC or cell phone and never carry out the procedure without authorization, under the risk of having legal problems in the future with the people involved.

Apowersoft Online Screen Recorder ( apowersoft.com ) is a webapp, which can be used by both Windows and macOS, through the browser and an additional launcher, which needs to be installed on the computer. It offers simple controls for adjusting the screen size, resolution and microphone usage, and can capture everything on the screen, including video calls. It has limitations, such as the inclusion of a watermark in the videos, but does not allow recordings longer than three minutes. The app is free.
5. CamStudio (Windows)
CamStudio (camstudio.org) is an open source Windows-compatible program that allows you to record your PC screen and all of its content, such as video calls. It supports overlay with webcam video but, being very old, it has received few updates over the years. Save to .avi or .swf only. The app is free.
6. QuickTime Player (macOS)
Users of older versions of macOS (up to High Sierra ) can use QuickTime Player, Apple’s native and standard video player, to record Mac’s screen. It supports audio capture from the microphone and captures all of the screen’s content.
To use QuickTime Player, do the following:
- Open QuickTime Player;
- Click on File and then on New Screen Recording;
- Click the arrow next to the record button and adjust the options, such as activating the microphone or displaying mouse clicks on the screen;
- Click the record button and then anywhere on the screen to record it;
- To record a portion of the screen, hold and drag the mouse to select the area of interest, and click Start Recording to begin;
- Click the Stop button on the Menu Bar or press the Command + Control + Esc key combination (on a non-Apple keyboard, Windows key + Ctrl + Esc).
How to use screen recording on iPhone, Mac and Windows 10
iPhone users from iOS 11, macOS Mojave and later and Windows 10 have native screen recording tools available, which support video and audio call capture from the microphone. Here’s how to use it.
1. On iPhone (iOS 11 and later)
- Open the “Settings” app and tap “Control Center”;
- Touch “Customize Controls”;
- Touch the “+” button next to the “Screen Recording” tool;
- Access the screen or app you want to record;
- Slide your finger (from top to bottom) on the top right corner of the iPhone;
- This will open the Control Center, tap the record screen button;
- iOS does a 3-second countdown, then starts recording;
- Hold the button and a pop-up will allow you to activate the microphone and capture external sounds;
Note that the status bar at the top of your iPhone or iPad has turned red; - To stop recording, touch the Status bar and the pop-up, “Stop”.
All recordings will be stored in the Image Gallery.
2. On macOS Mojave and later
- Press the “Shift + Command + 5” keys (on a non-Apple keyboard, “Shift + Windows key + 5”);
- To record the entire screen, click on the “Record Full Screen” button and then click on any area of the screen;
- To record only a selected area, click the Record Selected Area button, adjust the region of the screen you want to capture and click “Record”;
- To stop recording, click the Stop button.
And ready.
In the “Options” menu, the tool offers adjustments such as recording time, location where the video will be saved and the possibility of turning on the microphone.
3. On Windows 10
- Press the “Windows + G” keys;
- Windows will ask you if what you want to record is a game;
- Click on the box next to “Yes, this is a game” to confirm;
- The control panel offers options for turning on the microphone;
- You can even start a transmission;
- Once the adjustments are made, click on the record button; to stop, click the “Stop” button.
And ready.
The captures will be saved in the Videos folder.
