Boost your Typing Speed : Guide for beginners

The massive use of mobile devices compared to a few years ago, makes the more or less young people slightly distressed with the expensive old laptop keyboards and especially fixed PCs.

Actually you can type words using all your ten fingers and without having to look at the keyboard, it is an action that requires great training and concentration: once you master the typing on the keyboard, however, you can greatly increase your speed of writing, limiting (if not completely canceling) the dreaded typos.

Tactile typing: how to become very fast

First of all, completely forget the way you write on the touch screen, using only the tip of your thumbs. The highest levels in this sense are achieved not only by memorizing the position of each letter, number and sign on the keyboard, but also by memorizing which finger controls which keys.

What are the practical benefits?

When you make the first attempts it will seem impossible to be able to type quickly and accurately. In reality, with practice you can make real miracles!

Calculate that the time you waste moving your two fingers when using the touch method, drastically reduces your speed and even if you’re extremely fast: the number of words per minute that you will be able to type will be low, even three times lower than when you type with a keyboard and ten fingers.

Learning to type is therefore worth it, unless you plan to use the keyboard only occasionally: if you often write emails or long texts, learning quick typing is absolutely essential.

How to start learning

As you can imagine, there are no academic texts to learn how to write on the keyboard. Basically though, it is necessary to remember which finger uses which keys. This image should be quite exhaustive in this sense:

Specifically, remember that:

  • the left little finger should be placed on the A
  • the left ring finger goes to the S button
  • the left middle finger goes on the D
  • the left index on the F button
  • the right index on the J key
  • the right middle finger on the K
  • the right ring finger on L key
  • the right little finger on the ò (or accented)

Finally, both thumbs should be placed above the space bar.

Note: the letters F and J are marked (on any keyboard, not just on the keyboard) with small growths. These are very useful because, even if I had to lose contact with the keyboard unfortunately, will be tactile reference points to recover the position.

Now that you have found the correct position, you must know that you can move your fingers and reach all the keystrokes present very easily. The rest is all a matter of memorization of movements and practice.

Resources to learn

Even if as already said there are no courses or schools to learn, there is no lack of resources to practice.

When typewriters were used, books with tactile exercises were available in schools (the young ones will still remember them). Nowadays, however, there are no educational ideas of this kind.

The silent keyboard

A good idea to learn how to type on the keyboard is to buy a silent keyboard. It is simply a totally empty keyboard, without the presence of letters: at first glance it could seem like a real torture but, for the most tenacious, in the long run it could be an extraordinary solution.

Typing club

Typing club is a platform that allows you to choose language and layout to propose a series of initiatives aimed at improving your speed of writing.

In conclusion

Writing with a keyboard is easy, doing it well is another matter. If your work or your hobbies require the intense use of this device, you should commit yourself in order to be able to type quickly and reducing typos to a minimum.

Do not break down if at first it may seem impossible: with a little practice, anyone can become a real keyboard wizard!
