How to back up Chrome and Firefox browser bookmarks

Although modern browsers have bookmark synchronization, if you are migrating to a new computer or formatting your old computer, you may prefer to have a local copy of your bookmarks.

In this tutorial we will show you how to export (save) your bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome and how to restore (import) the bookmark backup to a new or reformatted computer.

How to back up bookmarks from Google Chrome:

With Chrome open, open your browser’s bookmark manager using the Ctrl + Shift + O shortcut key or click the top-right three-point button and select “Bookmarks> Bookmark Manager.”

Then click the bottom three-point button, select the “Export Bookmarks” option and select the folder where you want to save the HTML file with the backup of all the websites added to your bookmarks.

How to restore bookmarks from Google Chrome:

  • Open the bookmark manager again by pressing the shortcut key “Ctrl + Shift + O”.
  • Click on the three dot menu and then “Import Bookmarks.”
  • Finally, select the HTML file with the backup of Google Chrome bookmarks.

How to backup Firefox bookmarks:

With Firefox open, use the shortcut key “Ctrl + Shift + B” to open the Firefox Library. You can also press the ALT key to open the menu and select “Favorites> Show All Favorites”.

Then click on the “Import and Backup” option from the top menu, select the “Export Favorites as HTML” option and select the folder where you want to save the HTML file with the backup of Firefox bookmarks.

How to restore Firefox bookmarks:

  • Open the Firefox library again by pressing the shortcut key “Ctrl + Shift + B”.
  • Click on the “Import and Backup” option and select the “Import HTML Bookmarks” option.
  • Finally, select the HTML file with the backup of Firefox bookmarks.
