How to customize quick sites in New Tab in Chrome 69

How to enable customization of quick links to sites on the New Tab page, and how to customize and manage them in Chrome 69

Among the innovations of Chrome 69, on this version also debuted the function that allows you to customize the quick links of the websites displayed on the New Tab page, and to add new ones.

Up to Chrome 68, in fact, the user could only eliminate unwanted connections (they are derived from the browsing history), while now he can manage them fully and configure the New Tab page properly, making it even more useful based on his own web interests.

Before proceeding, however, if you place the “X” on top of a quick link page and not the three vertically arranged dots, it means that the personalization is not enabled and in this sense you have to activate it manually from the page Experimental features of Chrome. Let’s see how to proceed.

1. In the browser address bar, type and send chrome://flags to open the Chrome Experimental Features page.

2. Here in the internal search engine type New Tab Page Custom Links (otherwise reachable by pasting and sending in the address bar the string chrome://flags/#ntp-custom-links ) and press enter to find the homonymous experiment, then expand the relevant activation options menu and set the “Enabled” option instead of the “Default”.

3. Finally click the “Relaunch Now” button which will appear in the lower right corner to restart Chrome with the quick link customization feature enabled.

How to customize the quick sites in the New Tab

Once you open a New Tab page, you will now notice that the design of the quick links has already changed from the previous rectangular shape to the current circular shape.

By placing the mouse cursor on a quick link, click the button of the three dots arranged vertically that appears in the upper right corner of the icon to open the popup window “Edit shortcut“.

As you can see from this window you can delete the site in question from the New tab page by clicking the “Remove” button, or customize the name and/or URL by entering the appropriate input fields; to changes made confirm and then apply the whole by clicking the “End” button.

Finally, if you want to add a quick connection to a site of your interest, in this case you have to click the “+ Add shortcut” button to open the “Add shortcut” popup window in which you will then have to type the name and URL of the site or web page in question, to add it to the quick links of the page New tab.
