Google Maps Live View: navigation in augmented reality

Big news for all Android and iPhone smartphone owners: starting today, augmented reality browsing is available for all users.

As reported by various newspapers, the Mountain View company has officially begun the rollout of the function for the Google Maps application that allows you to get directions on your smartphone in AR (augmented reality) while on foot.

While in the past this feature was only available for owners of Pixel smartphones, now augmented reality browsing is available for all Android and iPhone compatible smartphone owners.

The feature is currently being released, so you may not have it on your smartphone yet. In any case, it will be enough to be patient to unlock this feature.

How to use Google Maps in augmented reality?

Operation is very simple: just search for a location on the map, after which you need to tap the down button and set the walk.

At this point a tap will be required on the new “Live View” option at the bottom of the screen.

As you can see, the function allows you to use the rear camera to frame the real landscape and, thanks to augmented reality, show the directions to follow.

At the moment it is a mode available only for navigation on foot and may never arrive in classic navigation, as it could distract the driver.

In addition to the latest version of Google Maps, your smartphone must be compatible with Google ARCore.
