The themes of the PS4 are the combination of media elements such as images, texts and sounds that make up the visual and sound part of the Playstation 4 operating system so that user interaction becomes more friendly and within thematic universes of the games.
As with systems like Android, it is possible to change these elements a little so that each user has a different experience, so we will learn more about the PS4 themes.
Static Themes vs. Dynamic Themes
We can divide the Playstation 4 themes into two categories:
- Static
- Dynamic
Static themes are usually just like any image file and when applied, just fill the bottom of the screen with a chosen static image.
Dynamic themes can have visual and sound effects, image changes between menu elements and some themes use interesting features, as is done in the commemorative theme of The Last of Us Part II, which uses the console clock to switch between different visuals between days and night (similar to light and dark mode).
In this theme, we have Ellie playing the guitar during the day. But, if you turn on the console at night, the theme changes to a night scene where Ellie is chased. These are simple things, but they end up catching our attention.
Where to download themes
Playstation 4 themes can be downloaded directly from the Playstation Store for free, but you can also buy paid themes there.
For this:
- Go to the main page of the Playstation Store;
- In the side menu bar, look for the “Themes” field
I downloaded, but I can’t change the theme on PS4
Come on, to install the themes on Playstation 4 you must do the following:
- Go to Settings;
- Choose the option “Themes”;
- Then, “Select theme”;
- This will open the gallery of themes you downloaded to be able to install.
Text Shadow
This option that you end up seeing when setting up the theme, changes the contours of the menu texts. This can improve readability for some people. I usually leave it in the default, but the black outline option looks good too.
Free PS4 Themes
We’ve already talked about what PS4 themes are and how to install them.
Now, let’s see some free themes for you to put on your Playstation 4.
Crash Bandicoot N-sane Trilogy Launch Theme
Dynamic theme from Sony’s classic “almost mascot”.
In addition to the theme, comes a set with two PSN avatars.
The Witcher 3 – Geralt and Ciri Theme
Our dear Geralt and Ciri appear in cool looks on the menus.
Tip: The Witcher 3 has a lot of free content, when on PSN, keep an eye on the “related items” option. However, as we are cool, here is another theme of The Witcher 3 for free. This is the “Monsters” theme, but there are others.
God of War – Dynamic Theme our Journey awaits
Of course, a list of PS4 item recommendations couldn’t be beaten by Kratos, the Ghost of Sparta. This dynamic theme based on God of War 2018 puts Kratos and Atreus in one of the most important locations in the game’s journey.
Okay, we gave some suggestions for themes, but it might not be enough.
We have another tip:
How to find free PS4 themes
- Go to the theme selection screen;
- Go to the bottom of the gallery and choose the option “Find in Playstation Store”;
- Then go to add filter and select free;
There are over 200 free themes on the PS Store. There is a remake of Final Fantasy 7, going through Sekiro, Cyberpunk 2077 and a whole bunch of themes related to other games, so have fun!
