You don’t have to put up with a computer that’s slowing down. Whether you use your machine to surf the Internet, work, play games, or communicate, you can take steps to speed it up. But first, you need to identify the cause of the performance issue.
1. Broken Hardware
Your hardware might be malfunctioning if you dropped your computer or spilled water on it. Sometimes, hardware malfunctions because of voltage fluctuations or a manufacturing defect. To check for broken hardware, run RAM, video card, and hard drive checks. You may need to replace a component if your computer crashes during the check. Alternatively, send your system to the manufacturer for a warranty claim.
2. Outdated Hardware
Aging hardware can cause your computer to fall behind. Nowadays, you should have at least 8GB of RAM to run modern applications. You can upgrade your RAM yourself if you have a desktop computer. Many laptops also have upgradeable memories. You can always take your machine to your computer store if you’re not comfortable performing the enhancements yourself.
Similarly, you can upgrade your hard drive to a Solid State Drive for a significant performance boost. An SSD will help you boot your computer faster and run apps more quickly.
3. Overheating Hardware
A cleaner computer will run more efficiently. Take your desktop outside and use a compressed air duster to remove dust, dead insects, and pet hair from your machine. Focus on the heatsink of your processor and video card to improve cooling.
4. Compatibility Issue
Did you start noticing performance issues after downloading new software or installing new hardware? Software and hardware compatibility issues can slow down your machine. For software, roll back the changes to see if it speeds up your machine.
For hardware, disconnect the new component to see if it makes any difference. Sometimes, a new piece of hardware’s drivers can also result in incompatibility issues. Look up the drivers on Google to see if other computer users are also suffering from slowdowns.
5. Computer Virus
Some types of malware, such as computer viruses and worms, can corrupt files and slow computers down. It’s essential to take advantage of a free antivirus download to stop a virus before it crashes your computer. Look for a light antivirus program that does the job without hogging system resources.
6. Adware
Adware is pesky malware that may spy on your browsing activity or blast your screen with ads. It can slow down your computer, browser, or Internet connection. Use an adware removal tool if you notice the following symptoms:
- Pop-ups on your screen promoting products and services
- New toolbars or extensions on your browser
- Browser home page changing without your permission
7. Cryptojacking
Cryptomining malware is a malicious program that uses your computer’s hardware to mine cryptocurrency for others. You may have cryptomining malware without realizing it! You can get such malicious software from shady websites, downloads, and attachments. Not only does cryptojacking slow your computer down, but it can also impact your download speeds and energy bills. Use top anti-malware software if you notice your computer operating at near-total capacity without reason.
8. Spyware
Malware that spies on your messages, uses your webcam or microphone, or takes screenshots can negatively impact your PC’s performance. A highly rated modern anti-malware tool can remove spyware.
You need to maintain your computer to help it run optimally. Clean your desktop regularly, use cybersecurity tools, and upgrade obsolete parts to extend your machine’s lifespan and performance.
