Tumblr released a statement in which it decided to ban adult content, from December 17th, on the platform. In politics similar to Facebook and Instagram, nude photos and videos were banned. There are exceptions and other details that are important to know to continue using the social network without getting into trouble.
What does Tumblr consider as adult content?
According to the Community Rules, you can no longer carry “images, videos or GIFs that show human genitals or female nipples. This includes photorealistic content that can be mistakenly interpreted as a real human being (but a good one to attempt)”. According to the text, “no content, including images, videos, GIFs or illustrations depicting sexual acts” is allowed.
How do I know if my blog was marked as adult content?
Tumblr will send email notifications to users whose content has been flagged as an adult. In that case, if a post of yours was flagged as “adult,” it will be hidden and converted to a “private” setting, which is visible only to you.
So make sure the email associated with your Tumblr account is the one you use. You can edit your data in the Platform Settings.
The statement speaks of exceptions, what are they?
The new rules explain that “certain types of content – such as artistic, educational, prominent or political – that exhibit nudity are accepted”. According to this view, statues and paintings of naked figures, content aimed at disease prevention or the human reproductive tract, or records of protests will not be affected. It is possible, however, that there is some mistake.
In the Help Center, this becomes clearer:
“Female nipples exposed in relation to times of breastfeeding and birth, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or surgery for confirmation of gender. Written content such as eroticism, nudity related to political speeches or news talk and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also things that can be posted freely on Tumblr”, it explains.
I do not agree with the signage, how to appeal?
The “Tumblr court” proves flexible and allows you to appeal from the categorization of a post if the content was flagged as an adult, but you do not think it should be. The user can use the button in the post in question (post by post). This process can only be done in the web version or in the Tumblr application (Android, version 12.2 or higher). If you’re on iOS (iPhone), use the web version to answer.
Tumblr has not reported waiting time and with the move taking place on December 17 (2018), the platform should receive a ton of them. These reviews and reviews of posts are always carried out by real people (not robots).
Tumblr will email you as soon as the appeal review is complete and if the content has already been reviewed by human moderators ever, it can not be disputed again and this will be advised. Avatars and blog headers will also be reverted to the default settings.

- Under “Relevant blog”, select the blog to be analyzed (if you have more than one);
- Please confirm that your email address is the same one you used to register your account. This will also be the email address that will contact you.
- Wait. It is not known how long this Tumblr content evaluation takes.
All this change means that the new policy denies the need for the “safe mode.” Therefore, this feature will no longer exist, regardless of your age.
