How to add a second internal hard disk in Windows 10

Everyone knows external hard drives are the drives which easily connect to a USB port on the computer. But when you have a desktop PC or laptop with an additional slot, you can add an internal hard drive.

Sometimes the disk is formatted in advance by the manufacturer, but it is not always the case. If your disk is not recognized by Windows 10 you will need to set some configurations. Here is a tutorial on how to add an internal hard drive to a PC with Windows 10.

How to add a second Windows 10 hard disk

Connect the hard drive inside your desktop PC or laptop and start the PC. Once on the desktop, execute the “Win” + “X” key combination (or right click on the Windows button) then choose “Disk Management”.

The new hard disk is not formatted in a particular format, it will be symbolized in black with the words “Unallocated”.

Right click on the area and then “New simple volume …”.

The volume creation wizard appears, go to “Next”.

Do not touch the size of the volume, the default is the largest possible, just click on “next”.

Assign the letter you want to assign to your hard drive, in this example I choose the letter “G”.

For a hard disk less than or equal to 2TB, select NTFS.

Give your hard drive a name, check the box’s fast format and validate with “Next”.

Wait a few minutes for formatting. Once done, the color is now blue and the partition is symbolized with the hatch.

Your hard drive is ready for use and appears on the “This PC” workstation.
