How to change the username in Windows 10

Before continuing with the change of Windows 10 username, I would like to steal a few seconds for a last “warning”. In case you want to change, in addition to the Windows 10 username, even that of the folder linked to it, you will have to follow other paths. The procedure that I will point out in a moment, in fact, will not allow you to rename the folder, which will still be connected to your old name.

If you want to hear my opinion, I suggest you not to change the name of the folder, to avoid compatibility problems of various kinds. In that case, in fact, it could be more profitable to save the account data, create a new local user or Microsoft and then transfer the data.

Change local username

To change your local Windows 10 username, you have two methods available. You could use the Control Panel or the User Accounts Manager Panel. I state that the result will be the same.

In the first case, you must open, of course, the Control Panel. From there, you have to click on User account and then on Change account type. In the window that opens, choose the profile you want to change the name of and click on the Change account name link. At this point, you will only have to follow the procedure and, after a few minutes, the change will be “operational”.

In the second case, instead, you have to open the Execute window by pressing the keysWindows + Rand at the same time, in the field in the middle of the window, type the command netplwiz. After a few moments, the User Account window will open. From there, select the user whose name you want to change in the Users table for the computer and then click the Edit button. When you open another window, in the User Name line, enter your new username and confirm your choice by clicking on Ok.

Change Microsoft profile user name

The procedure for changing a Windows 10 username related to a Microsoft profile is simpler and “standardized” than previously seen. Open the Operating System Settings by clicking on the Start button and then on the gear icon on the left side of the menu.

In the window that opens, follow the path Account > your infoand select the Manage my Microsoft account option. You will then access the Microsoft online account management panel. From there, click on the More Actions link that appears below your name. Then, choose the Edit profile option. At that point, click on Change the name, wait for the loading of a new screen and enter the new username following the wizard. Once the operation is complete, the Microsoft account name will be replaced on Windows 10 automatically as well.
