So you’ve decided to create a Hotmail account, right? Not sure how to access Hotmail from your computer, Android smartphone or iOS device? Do not worry, I’m here to help you. In this guide I will explain step by step how to create a Hotmail account, and especially how to access it from the various devices in your possession. Before starting to thoroughly examine all the steps you need to perform, however, I would like to give you a general understanding of the characteristics of this famous e-mail service.

First of all it is important to inform you that Hotmail is no longer available as a real email service. For several years now, Microsoft has decided to replace it with Outlook. Do not panic! It will still be possible to create and access a Hotmail account. In fact, despite the e-mail service has been retired in the now “far” 2013, even today it is possible to create an e-mail address with the domain @hotmail.com. To create a Hotmail account today you have to go through things from Outlook.com, but I’ll explain later how to actually create the account.

How to create a Hotmail account

Now fill out a very detailed form in which you will enter your personal data: name, surname, username, password, country, date of birth, etc.

In this regard I would like to make a couple of recommendations. First of all, with regard to the username you are going to choose, select the @ hotmail.com domain from the drop-down menu. If you do not do this you will not create a Hotmail account, but an Outlook account. As for the password, however, try to use an invented word that consists of numbers, letters and even some symbol ( ! , ? , &, $ , € , = , + , * , # , § , etc.). After creating the password, keep it in a safe place, away from prying eyes.

Once you have filled in the correct way all the mandatory fields in the registration form, you can proceed to the creation of the Hotmail account for free. All you have to do is press the blue Create account button. Did you see? Creating a Hotmail account through Outlook.com was easier than expected, just like I told you!

Now you just have to see how to access your new Hotmail account from your computer (Windows PC or Mac computer), from your Android smartphone or tablet and from your iPhone or iPad. All you have to do is read the following paragraphs with patience.

How to access Hotmail from your computer

Now is it your intention to access the Hotmail account you just created from your Windows, Linux or MacOS computer? Nothing could be simpler. To access from any computer you do not have to do is connect to the official site of Outlook, this is the same step we did to create the account, remember?

However, now you do not have to press the SignUp button, since we have completed the registration procedure only a few moments ago. Rather, you will have to click on the Login button. Once you have done this you will be redirected to a page where you will be asked to enter your username (eg [email protected] ). Type the username you created in the appropriate field and immediately click on Next.

If you entered your username correctly, you should now have access to a new field: Enter your password. Therefore enter the password you created during registration in this field and then click on Login. If you entered the correct password, then you can easily access your new Hotmail account. You’re happy?

If unfortunately you do not remember the password, you can start the password recovery procedure. How? All you have to do is click on the option I forgot my password. At this point you will be asked why you can not log in. Select one of the three options available (eg I forgot my password), type your username in the required field and then click on Next.

If you have entered your username correctly, you will now be able to choose the password recovery mode. You can choose, for example, to retrieve the password of your Hotmail account via an alternative email address, via a text message to your mobile phone or through a call. Now you can just click on Next to access the form that will allow you to access your Hotmail account. Please enter your username again and click on Next. Enter the new password in the appropriate field and confirm by clicking on Next. Congratulations, you’ve just managed to get back into your Hotmail account!

How to access Hotmail from Android

Now I bet you would like to access Hotmail even from your Android smartphone or tablet, am I right? I can assure you that even in this case the procedure you need to perform is not that complicated. So grab your device with on board the Google operating system and follow carefully the instructions that I will give you in the next few lines.

To access Hotmail from your Android device, all you have to do is install the official Microsoft Outlook app on your device. To install the app, open the Google Play Store (the app in the shape of a colored triangle) and type in the search field “Microsoft Outlook”. At this point press on the app icon and then on Install. Now wait patiently for a few seconds and then click on Open to start the app or, alternatively, touch the blue icon that has been inserted in the Home of your device.

Once the app is opened you will have a white screen in front of you. The only thing you’ll see is the Outlook icon and the Start button. As you can guess, you’ll need to tap on Start to set up your Hotmail account and to be able to access it from your Android device.

Immediately after tapping on Start you will be asked to enter your e-mail address (eg [email protected] ). Enter your address and then tap Continue. After that you will be asked to enter your password, complete this step and then press the Login button. You will be asked if you want to add another account, if you do not want to do so you can safely tap Ignore. At this point you will find a brief explanation of how to best use your account, even in this case you can choose Ignore or, alternatively, view the entire explanation and then tap the “tick” symbol. At this point you will have access to your Hotmail account! Are not you happy?

How to access Hotmail from iOS

If you have an iPhone or an iPad and you’re wondering how to access Hotmail on iOS, then pay attention to the information I’m about to give you. You’ll see, the procedure you will need to follow is not too different from what you need to complete Android users.

Also in this case, in fact, to access Hotmail from your iDevice you will have to open the application store of the Cupertino company to install the Microsoft Outlook application. So open the App Store by tapping the blue icon on which you find an “A”. Now type in the “Microsoft Outlook” search field and tap on Get and then click on Install. Wait for a few seconds for the app to be downloaded and touch the Open button. If you want, you can also open the app directly from the Home screen, simply tap the blue icon of the app you just downloaded.

Once you have opened the app you will be asked to enter your e-mail address in a specific field. Type your Hotmail email address and press Add account. Now enter the password and confirm by pressing Login. You will then be asked if you want to add another account. If you’re not going to do that press on the Later button. As happened with the app for Android devices, even in this case you will find a brief explanation of how the service works. Tap Ignore to access your account. See? Accessing your Hotmail account from iOS is really very simple.

If, however, you do not want to download the Outlook app to your device, you can still access your Hotmail account using the Mail app that you find “standard” on your iPhone or iPad. In order to do this you will have to go to Settings (the gray gear icon) scroll the menu on the left and tap the Mail item. Now tap on Account from the menu you can see on your left.

After performing the operation described in the previous paragraph, tap on Add account. Touch the Outlook.com icon and type your Hotmail email address. Then confirm by tapping the Forward button. Enter your password now in the appropriate field and then tap Login. Confirm the operation by touching Yes and then Save. “Magically” your Hotmail account can be used directly in the Apple Mail application.

Log in to Hotmail through an email client

If the solutions that I have listed so far have not particularly convinced you, especially the Microsoft Outlook app, you can decide to configure your Hotmail account on any e-mail client. If your account is not configured automatically you can use the IMAP or POP3 parameters shown below.

The IMAP and POP parameters that I have shown above must be entered when you will be using an e-mail client. Eg:

  • If you use Mail, the client that you find preinstalled on macOS, the procedure you need to perform is as follows: start Mail, click on Mail (top left, next to the Apple logo), select Add account and select the provider. If the account is not configured automatically, you can configure it manually using the IMAP or POP3 parameters I have mentioned above.
  • If you use Mozilla Thunderbird, however, you will need to start the client, click on the item Create a new account and then click on Email. Then you need to set up an existing account, just your Hotmail.com account. After that you will have to fill in the required fields (email, password, etc.) and manually enter the IMAP or POP3 parameters you find at the top.
