Switching From Windows to MAC Guide | Everything You Need to Know

This guide is dedicated to those who have just switched from Windows to Mac, as we all know this and much more intuitive and ordered to Windows.

But at least at the beginning one might find oneself a bit confused because of some completely different aspects between the two operating systems.

Let’s look at the main ones and what are the differences in moving from Windows to Mac.

FROM WINDOWS TO MAC | THINGS TO KNOW

  • File Explorer> Finder

Practically the same thing: while in Windows to browse through the various files in the system we used the now well known File Explorer, in the Mac we have the Finder, which we find as the first item at the bottom left in the Dock.

  • We immediately enable the right button.

Here is a small detail that at first sends us a bit ‘in confusion coming from Windows to Mac; let’s enable it immediately by entering system preferences > mouse or trackpad> secondary click.

  • Closing blocked applications.

In Windows you had to enter the Task manager with ctrl> alt> delete and close the application; with the Mac, however, simply click with the right mouse button on the app in the Dock and select forced closing or alternatively click on the apple in the upper right corner and then close and choose the app to close.

AUTOMATIC START APPLICATIONS

Sometimes the automatic start of some applications can cause a slowdown in the initial execution of the operating system.

With Windows it was enough to delete from the automatic start directory, the app or alternatively use some external software (like Ccleaner ).

With the Mac, however, it is enough to enter system preferences> Users or groups> login elements and disable them.

  • Application installations.

The installation of the applications is completely different in the two systems: with Windows you can go to the Store or alternatively download the file with the extension .exe and install it; with Mac or decide the way of ‘AppStore or download the file this time in .dmg format; once clicked on the file this will be mounted and we will not have to do anything else but drag it into the application folder.

  • Uninstall the applications.

Also this aspect is very different: in Windows just go to the control panel and uninstall the app in question; With the Mac, simply drag the application icon from the folder to the trash. However, there are external software, such as AppCleaner, which after removal also delete all unused files connected to it.

  • Screenshot of the screen.

To photograph the screen of your machine in Windows, use the Windows + print key combination; with the Mac instead we will use Command + Shift + 3 to capture the entire screen and Command + Shift + 4 to capture a single portion.

HOW TO FORMAT AN EXTERNAL VOLUME

In Windows, as you all know, simply click with the right mouse button on the device icon and choose format, then decide the type of format. With OS X, however, you have to go to the folder Other> Disk Utility and format the drive. With the Mac as well as the proprietary file ( journaled ), we can also read and write the Fat32, while for the NTFS extension we can only read it.

  • Machine information.

With Windows, click on the menu button at the bottom left and go to the computer, then right- click on properties to get all the information; with the Mac just click on the apple in the upper left and then on information on this Mac.

  • Control panel.

This in Windows is replaced by system preferences accessible directly from the Dock or using Spotlight.

Well, these are just some differences between the two operating systems, but in our opinion they are certainly more significant. With a little ‘patience especially at the beginning you will see that the management of all your activities with the Mac will certainly be more’ fun and above all ordered and, after a few days of use, you will be really satisfied.
