USB Port not Working? | Here’s What to do

You realized USB ports in your PC or Mac not working proper when you insert a stick or any external device still nothing happens?

Do not worry because the problem can be solved very simply.

When we present these types of problems, most of the time we are faced with a software problem and it is not ‘therefore said that your Computer or Mac are broken, far from it.

If you do not know how to solve, this guide is for you; you do not need a computer technician to do this, just a little patience and a few minutes of your time.

Let’s start by saying that the procedure is aimed at both Windows users and those who use the Mac.

Before wasting time unnecessarily, make a first test: try connecting the device to another PC or Mac to make sure the problem is not the device itself.

Did you connect it to another PC or Mac and still do not work? Well, let’s proceed then.

REHABILITATE USB PORTS IN WINDOWS

  • Go to the Computer or This PC icon (depending on the version of Windows you have) and click on it with the right mouse button, Properties> device management
  • After a few moments, which is necessary for the PC to load all the devices present, you will find yourself in front of a list.
  • Locate the USB Controller ( Universal Serial Bus ) entry.
  • Now click on it and expand it.
  • Check at this point that there are no USB items turned off (they usually have a black icon); if present, click with the right mouse button and choose Activate.
  • At this point wait a few moments; the offending USB port should work again!

Check the correct operation by reconnecting the previously unrecognized device. It works? Perfect you have managed to solve the problem, congratulations!

If you have not yet solved your problem do not despair: there is an alternative method:

  1. Starting again from step 4, expand the USB Controller ( Universal Serial Bus ).
  2. Now with the right mouse button choose the item uninstall in each of the selected devices.
  3. Restart your PC; now Windows will reinstall all deleted devices.

If you have not yet solved then let’s move on to the strong ways.

We will go to act on the system registry.

  1. Open the Registry Editor ( Win + R on the keyboard).
  2. In the panel, type regedit and press OK and then YES.
  3. From the left bar, click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  4. Click now on SYSTEM> CurrentControlSet> services> USBSTOR.
  5. Well, now on the right-hand side double-click on the start entry.
  6. In the window that opens under Value data, type 3.
  7. Now click OK to save the changes.

At this point the USB ports should return to work regularly.

REHABILITATE USB PORTS IN MACOS

If you have a Mac and you have the same type of problem, the procedure obviously changes radically. We will try to solve by doing a reset of the SMC.

The SMC ( System Management Controller ) is nothing more than a chip that deals with the energy management of some components of the Apple house, so the problem could be a configuration of the SMC firmware itself, configured incorrectly, which with the reset should settle again. How to do?

The procedure varies depending on the model of Mac; but let’s go step by step.

Steps for iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini.

  • Turn off your Mac from the apple> turn off.
  • Disconnect the power supply and wait 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord now.
  • Turn the Mac book on.
  • Mac Book procedure, Mac Book Pro products before 2009.
  1. Turn off your Mac from the apple> turn off.
  2. Disconnect the power supply and wait 15 seconds.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. Hold down the Power button for 5 seconds.
  5. Reinsert the battery.
  6. Reconnect the power supply.
  7. Turn the Mac book on.
  • Procedure for Mac Book Pro produced after 2009, Mac Book Pro Retina, Mac Book Air.
  1. Turn off your Mac from the apple> turn off.
  2. Connect if the power supply is not already connected.
  3. Run the shift + ctrl + alt + power key combination from your Mac keyboard.
  4. Turn the Mac back on.

After the correct procedure to reset the SMC chip your USB ports should return to normal operation.
