How to enable or disable automatic updates on iPhone or iPad

App Store can also automatically update your installed apps. Here’s how to enable these updates, or disable them if you prefer to update manually.

For example, you might want to disable automatic updates on your operating system and apps to save data.

Operating system updates

To enable or disable automatic updates of the operating system, go to Settings> General> Software Update.

You will see if automatic updates are enabled or disabled. If you do not see this option, you have not yet installed iOS 12.

To enable or disable updates, tap “Automatic updates” and set the cursor to “On” or “Off”.

Updates will not be installed immediately when they become available. They will be installed at night when connected to a power outlet, so they will not interrupt you while using your iPhone or iPad.

Even if automatic operating system updates are disabled, you can still go to Settings> General> Software Update to install any available updates.

App updates

To enable or disable automatic app updates, go to Settings> iTunes and App Store. Enable or disable the “Updates” option in Automatic Downloads on “On” or “Off”.

App updates will not be installed immediately when they become available. Your iPhone or iPad will install updates when it is connected to power and is not used, for example when you’re charging at night.

Even if automatic app updates are disabled, you can open the App Store app, tap “Updates” on the bar at the bottom of the screen and install all available app updates from here.
